Fluke Fishing Tricks (Double Fluke Rig) – Catch 2 Bass At Once!!

These fish are smashing the Double Fluke Rig! Matt is on the water chasing a fluke bite (soft jerkbait) and the fish are chewing the double fluke AKA Donkey Rig. If you’ve never thrown a double fluke, its a great option for schooling bass. Matt catches a bunch of fish then sits down and shows exactly how he builds and fishes this rig. Don’t miss the end when he catches a double!

The concept behind the double fluke rig is very similar to an A-rig. You’ve got multiple baits working in unison to trigger a feed response. When you hook up you’ve got the added bonus of a potential double up at any time because the 2nd bait is still free swinging. Building and fishing the rig are both simple enough but if you really want to fine tune it, we’ve got some tweaks for you.

We use different size leaders, different hooks, and different baits to get our baits to run in 2 different water columns (one below the other) to dial in the bite and keep the fish eating our mainline bait first. By changing the hook placement or by switching between the Zoom and Strike King baits you can get the baits to run even farther apart. If you want the whole rig to run deeper, using larger swivels will weigh down the nose of the rig and help it maintain depth after you let it sink at the start of your cast.

Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment Matt is using in the video as well as the added gear he uses to adapt the rig. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

  1. Tried it, loved it. Even caught 2 fish at once first time I tried it. My question is…. if you put a bullet weight on one or both flukes to fish deeper does it tangle or screw up the fluke action?

  2. I used to watch Roland Martin and Bill dance back in the late 90s early 2000s. I learned so much from them. You are now my go to on YouTube. Very helpful pointer about switching up the rigging for the front and rear fluke; making the front swim straight while rear dives down 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  3. So will it work to fluorocarbon as your mainline or will that be more likely to damage the line than using braid as the main line?
Just worried about that barrel swivel sliding back and forth wearing down the fluorocarbon.

I had great luck with flukes on 10lb fluorocarbon on medium fast spinning rod.

  4. It’s nice to see this and you’re not flipping them on the boat and messing up there slim coat. It would of been easier to set them down at the end, I appreciate y’all trying your best to handle the fish as little as possible and keeping them off the carpet when it’s dry.

  5. Its an older video so you may not see the comment but this was one of your most informative because it actually helps teach the understanding of how things work instead of how to just copy a technique. Nice!

  6. That's a good rig but I always just used spros 3way swivel, main line to one end of the swivel and 2 leaders to the other 2 swivel ends, I do a 1 footer and the other about 4 inches shorter, love when they double up

  7. Hey Matt I found out from watching ott Defoe how to cast those double flukes better. You pretty much make a skip cast every time. Low to water side arm cast. It gets both flukes together and not twirling end over end. Try it out and see how it works for you. You may know already. But

  8. On the Louisiana Gulf coast we've been fishing a very similar rig for speckled trout and Redfish for decades. And yes, when they're schooling you'll catch two at a time; sometimes a Red and a speck. What we do is try two different lures, usually a plastic shrimp and a minnow, or two different colors. We always take note of which color or lure the fish are going for, and then just rig the second hook with that lure. When I saw this rig for bass a few years ago I just thought, now why didn't I think of that first. It works great! I also use the same technique for bass. I'll experiment with two different colors and sizes until they tell me what they want. I've even used this technique with two trick worms, mainly in the Summer and Spring swamp fishing down here, and they knock the fire out of it. Try it!

  9. Man, I really want to thank you for ruining my marriage…… I will now never leave the water until I catch two largies at once! Thanks for the info guys. Love the channel and WANNA FISH WITH YOU GUYS!!!

  10. Matt… Do you think I could double rig with the nose hook technique and not get tangled up? I've been throwing a single fluke with the centering pin and the nose hook and it's great maybe only the trailing bait of a donkey rig double fluke because of the shorter one might get hung up on the line
