Big Swimbaits on Smith Lake

Today we’re fishing Lewis Smith Lake in northern Alabama with my good friend, Barry Maner of Decatur, AL.I’ve filmed several TV shows with Barry here in Alabama and down in Florida! It’s the end of March and the water temps are in the lower 60’s. We start off looking for big spotted bass but end up way back in a dingy warmer water pocket and start catching big largemouth from 3-6 pounds. Wake baits and glide baits really pay off and we explain how we use them. A super day on Smith Lake with a 20 pound plus bag ! Wow!

  1. Looks Like a Sneaky Pete.
Try use the reel handle and make it walk and twitch it underwater while retrieving that sneaky sucker. Or slow as you can and fast as you can works at different times. Slow rolling it works but with the twitch and pause. One of my techniques.
Bone with the red tail is amazing for stripe bass.
For the price it’s hard to beat.
Change those hooks and split rings if you go for striper.

  2. I ordered from G-Ratt the Pistol Peter after watching you Roland, they added two stickers for your boat if you buy from them right from the web-site, came today and plan to use it on North Carolina lakes and where I live by one of our newest lakes called Randleman Lake which was stocked with Florida Bass for a very interesting setup this far North of Florida.

  3. Hey Bubba, I live right around the corner from that location where you were catching them big fish. I’m glad you showed that business card to look at. I’m calling him today to get me that lure.

  4. What is up with the first 5 or six you showed and no spots? On smith? Lol that’s kinda not easy to do there actually. And all really good ones too; I love it. It’s because you had a Florida boy with you. 😂😂Last time I was there it was a little like that. I had took a cousin who was up visiting promising him some big spots. We did catch some spots. A lot actually… but except for one maybe 3, they were all 10-12 inch dinks. The largemouth were not so easy to come by. I think we caught 7 LM total, but the size was great. Every largemouth bite we got was close to 5. I think those big spots can smell the Florida on a fella 😂😂.
