Underspin Tricks You've Never Tried That Catch More Bass!

Underspins are a great way to catch bass in the Fall. They add flash and vibration to your favorite swimbait and help it stand out amongst a crowd of baitfish. Whether you’re throwing a big swimbait in search of a giant bass or a tiny finesse swimbait just looking for a bite, rigging it on an underspin can make a huge difference!

Tim has a handful of underspins that he relies on to consistently catch fish. Whether he’s throwing a 2.8 keitech on a spinning rod, or a larger swimbait deep in the grass, there is a perfect hook for every application. When the fish are short striking or targeting the blade, he’s got a trick to add a stinger hook to the blade to hook those finicky bass as well! If you’re not throwing an underpin this Fall, you’re missing a great opportunity to load the boat with quality fish.

Below you’ll find links to the exact baits, hooks, and components Tim showed in the video. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. We’ve also included some of his favorite rod/reel combos for these techniques, including a budget combo for anglers that are just getting into this style of fishing.

  1. Thanks for the tips! Got me some underspins rigged up tonight for the morning, put the stingers on them and hoping to put the smack down on some stripers and sandies . I’m feeling like game on, ha!

  2. The new Deps Frilled shad works great as an under-spin trailer- has a very tight, subtle action to it- really good for cold water. If that's still too much action for them you can always go to a fluke style bait- sometimes the paddle tail and the blade is just too much. I also like to throw other baits on the flashy swimmers- doesn't have to be a swim bait you know. I've thrown curly tail worms on them, little craws, little creature baits, the rage products seem to work pretty well in the summer time when they're really active. If you think about it, that's not really that odd- ppl do what's called "rage rigging" which is just putting a rage craw or something like that on a keel weighted swimbait hook and swimming horizontally through the water- well this just adds some flash to your rage rig. I've even thrown senkos on them- and it works.

  3. I learn so much from you guys! I don't have this hobby figured out just yet and often come out without a bite. But, I LOVE it so much and come home to study YouTube videos from all the GREATS to learn what I can do better next time!

  4. Love the underspin. Nice tip about the weedless presentation. Never thought about using those around grass and reed lines. Will definitely going to BPS to get those Owner set ups and try my hand on that at get hook tip. Thank you for sharing it!

  5. Thank you for showing all your tips! It helps so much out on the water! I am curious though, I am an avid fisherman from Idaho with a mildly tight budget for gear. I am going to be in the market for a new rod/reel combo for christmas. I have watched your entire buyers guide series however, there are just so many options to choose from and it is overwhelming. I am wanting a new all around fishing rod/reel. Do you have any combos that come to mind for a general all around combo? Any where from $300-$400 for the combo. I would love to hear from yall. Thanks!! =)

  6. I remember using these years ago that we made before they were popular. I was kinda bummed when they became mainstream. I won a few tourneys with these before ppl knew about them…lol

  7. I caught my new “pond” PB last night using an underspin for the first time!! I’m now convinced that Tim is the best bass YouTuber as I’ve used lots of his tips with great success. Thanks Tim!!!

  8. Hey Tim question for you on one of your tips…I throw swimbaits a ton (primarily keitechs with the megabass okashira screw heads) and I've seen your tip regarding the super glue to keep your swimbait up but I'm wondering how hard is it to get that plastic off your swimbait once you super glue it on? I'll switch between a black/silver color to a rainbow trout pattern to blue/green's for bluegill colors all on the same lake on the same day. If I super glue that plastic on is it a pain to change the plastic? Even on heads like the okashira screwhead the bait slides off all the time, the keepers on those are horrible. I guess I can just go try it but figured I'd ask anyway. Tight lines man.

  9. Had a 3.8 Keitech with a flashy swimmer tied on this weekend didn't win the tournament but got big fish and cashed a check infact I always have a Keitech with an underspin tied on when it gets bit it's usually a quality fish

  10. Easy shiners and swing impacts have been really good for me so far this fall on the small local lakes and streams but I really need to start throwing some underspins with these.

  11. Damn Tim with the killer tip, I have put a VMC bladed treble on my underspins when I get short strikes but your tip is a better solution. Thank you for the tip, keep crushing it guys.
