The chatterbait and swim jig are both awesome! Come along for a fun day of fish catching in shallow water! Both the swim jig and the chatterbait are proven fish catchers, but a lot of anglers struggle to understand when to use each style. Today Matt is focusing on these two baits, as well as a frog, to target fish around shallow cover.
For us, the choice between these proven shallow water options is the cover you’re fishing around (or through). The chatterbait has amazing drawing power, can cover water quickly, and can be fished erratically. However, it struggles in thick vegetation. The swim jig doesn’t have nearly the drawing power, but makes up for it in ability. A swim jig can go anywhere, fish through anything, and gets BIG bites! Add in a frog for good measure and you’ve got a proven system for shallow water fishing!
Below you’ll find links to all the baits and gear we used to target these fish. We’ve included the exact sizes and colors for each, along with rods and reels Matt used to get these fish out of cover. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Toho? Looked like the canal entrance.
👍👍👍
I need that thin hoodie and those fishing gloves! Where do I get them?
I live in Louisiana. I have a couple of these swim jigs set ups, but I have never caught a fish on them so I don’t use them. Don’t really know how to use them the right way. Is it a finesse style? Do I just throw it out and start cranking?
12:25 , fast hookset in the West.
This definitely appears to be the Kissimmee chain, fished it many times, and love the bites and fish action.
hey man left a couple of comments with questions did hear back
I love these onn the water videos.
Finally catching bass with chatterbaits . Smaller chatterbaits at least 🙏
Unfortunately for me I can not catch a bass on a chatterbait. Weirdest thing, but spinnerbaits and swim jigs are my go to baits. I do still try the chatter in case my luck turns.
I really enjoy your content, been watching more of your videos. Great stuff! I’m thinking of starting a channel. What cameras and mics are you using? You have great video and audio.
Just killed it on the big blade this past month super slow with a delight 5.5 . Nothing bigger than 5.1/2ish -6 but it was fun catching 80 bass or maybe 100 lost count.
Another awesome video as usual. Is that Apopka?
Hi Matt. Another great video. Need some advice on chatterbait. I bought one online but the hook and head of the chatterbait are connected with a split ring, so the hook is free to "wobble" in the water. Haven't used it yet, do you have any experience on this or do you always get chatterbaits whose hook is connected to the head?
I really like how you fast forwarded instead of just skipping to the next fish catch torwards the end. Shows how much work goes into each catch that way. Great video
how would jerkbait work in shallow water?
im working on a new concept for a chatterbait. kind of want to send one to you or tell you how its made to test it out. my first prototype has just the slightest body shake, vibrates at insanely slow speeds, and almost seemed to cause itself to "deflect" and dart out of cadence and come back in on a steady retrieve. im thinking clear water with that one maybe.
Is that a Slobberknocker 😂
🤔🤔 hmmm this doesn’t look like Tennessee 😂 🤣enjoy your trip buddy ❤️👊
Hey Matt do you have any thoughts on the st. croix victory series???

I'm pretty new to the fishing world, so I apologize if this is an over asked question. When setting up your jigs or chatter baits or whatever it may be, do you tie line directly to your jigs/hooks or are you using swivels? I assume you’re tying directly to the jigs.
Also.. what knot if you do?
And another question (please don’t answer all if you don’t want too), when you’re adding a FC leader to your braid, what sort of knot are you tying. I’m just getting setup to start trying BFS in western Canada, and all we got here are super shy trout, so I’m going to need a pretty small leader. I planned to try Varivas braid for the main line on the spool, and then using a FC 4-8lbs leader depending on conditions. And I really have no idea how I shouldn’t connect them or what’s a strong knot for this.. everything online is a controversial keyboard warrior war over everything fishing related.
Follow the birds, that’s the old school fish finder!
You in Florida right now? I miss those big largemouth, but I love Kentucky smallmouth🤷
The time lapse is awesome
with all those pads, thats gambler big easy country down there😂
Matt, thanks bro!!!! Been sub of u guys, for long time. Cause nobody does it better than u 2. I mean you show the bait, colors, weights, fish caught, and 1 1st you tubers but bait links in description. Great video, keep em coming!!!!
I know you’re fishing in shallow, but for bank fisherman would you recommend going to a lighter weight on the jigs so they aren’t hitting the bottom as much?
The lake I fish is only 10' to 18' at the deepest and the rest of it is like this lake your fishing these are great tips thanks Matt 👍🏻
Love the videos where we see you guys fishing at length, putting those techniques into action. It's awesome. Please bring more. Thank you so much!
One for the bank fishermen! 😂
First time I've seen Mat with a butt seat.
The bird at 5.57 was wild lol
Thanks Matt for another fun day. Chatterbait! Chatterbait!
Another banger Matt. Hope you and the TB family are doing awesome. I'll shoot you a PM soon.
Big question….what knot do you use to tie braid to leader? Maybe you can do a new vid on it!
Super bummed i lost my TB hat and Tacklewarehouse doesnt have any. Any word when they are getting more?
I’ll never understand how u cast into that stuff and not get stuck. For the life of me I can’t do it
Dirty water has always been better fishing for me. Bass will
Bite more because they can’t see the lure?
Nice boat brother!!
Matt it is good to see frog time. Bassmd
Curious, anyone bought the new monster jig by Missile baits i think? IKES Monster jig i think it's called…it's freakin' huge & looks awesome…i bought the rainbow trout color with a 6" paddle tail on the back in pro blue/red….can't wait to swim it around
The unknowns, in bass fishing's what makes the sport enjoyable & addictive…u just never know
I want your life.
Always enjoy the video's but could have watched this one all day
