Weedless rigged swimbaits excel anytime bass are scattered across shallow snag-infested flats. We caught up with swimbait expert Fred Roumbanis for a lesson on how to rig and fish weedless swimbaits for spring bass on the verge of the spawn. For Roumbanis, this is skinny water fishing at its finest and a situation where a weedless swimbait flat-out triggers quality fish through realism, vibration, and snag resistance.
FEATURED TACKLE
• ROD – Sixgill Fenrir Series Flipping Rods, 7’6” Heavy: https://wired2.fish/3OgMVzE
• REEL – Sixgill Hamarr Series Casting Reel, 8.0:1: https://wired2.fish/3vuZgHV
• SWIMBAIT – Optimum Baits Weedless Boom Boom Swimbait, 4 1/2” Black & Blue: https://wired2.fish/3jUoyKk
• HOOK – Hayabusa WRM958 Weighted Wide Gap Screw Lock Hook, 5/0: https://wired2.fish/3rETfYd
• LINE – 20-pound Fluorocarbon (your preference): https://wired2.fish/3OpJre7
Shallow water and a big weighted swimbait hook require a long and powerful rod setup to make long casts and deliver the necessary hook-setting force and power to hook and extract fish from thick cover. Roumbanis details his rod, reel, and line for weedless swimbaits and why darker colors often produce best, particularly in dirty water or on dark days. This swimbait tactic works near year-round anytime bass are shallow and cover-oriented.

Why flouro and not braid?
That's why I throw a weed guarded bladed swim jig
Dobyns has his signature swimbait rod on sale on their website right now. Get one while you can.
That reel sounds like it's full of gravel
The big male bluegill in my pond turn black when they're on beds guarding so I use black then also.
I personally really like sixgills rods and have several now. That said I thought the Fenrir was more of a flipping rod
Dobyns is better 🤷🏼♂️
A company that makes lures to catch largemouth bass told you black and blue was a bad color? Time to find a new company.
LOVE the Baby Boom Boom! I’ll have to get me some of the black and blue ones now. Thanks Greg!
I've been waiting for this one!
Six gill rods are terrible. I bought two on their BOGO. The first one broke the first week on a 5lb bass and the other one lasted around 6 months. Never again.
so is it the 7/0 or 5/0 hook for the 4.5
With all that bait it doesn't look like ther a whole lot of room left to stick the fish, is there a slot in the belly?
