Bass Fishing: Swimbait Vs. Underspin Challenge

Today we go head-to-head with a weedless swimbait and an underspin! Matt is throwing a Beast Hook paired with a variety of paddle tail swimbaits while Tim is using a Flashy Swimmer weedless underspin. Which one will catch the most? Which one will catch the biggest bass? Come along for the fun and a bonus BIG catch!

Both hook styles can be incredibly effective. The Beast Hook has a deep gap, resulting in an amazing hook up ratio. The gap also allows the hook to pair with a variety of baits. The Flashy Swimmer has a narrower gap but is offered in heavier weights and includes a fish attracting blade. The flashy swimmer has incredible drawing power for its size and is a great option around baitfish.

Today the fish were clearly favoring the Beast hook. The natural presentation proved irresistible to fish of all sizes. Below is a break down of the hooks, baits, and tackle we were using.

  1. Random question I've noticed in alot of fishing videos guys on boats often wear flip flops even when it's cold and they are wearing jackets and pants is there a reason for the flip flops or is it just personal choice just seems like in the cold it's not the best choice and I'm wondering if there is a reason that makes cold feet worth it

  2. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you. You have shown me that the details matter. I like the challenges where the bait is slightly modified and see who boats more fish. Your you tube channel is one of the best.

  3. @tacticalbassin can you guys do a seminar style video on how different lure types and colors typically correspond with different weather types? That would be a huge help to me because I have a lot of trouble putting a pattern together. Most of my outings are just hit or miss. And I'm really trying to up my game and start competing in some entry level tournaments. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide. Im addicted to watching your videos. You guys are awesome

  4. Im an avid user of both rigs. Underspin being my favorite. I fish gin clear water in AZ. The gold blade underspin catches literally 2x's compared to silver. I assume the reason is it resembles what's on the daily menu more closely. Could there be any other reason why?

  5. Please, have mercy on me. Let me win the Matt Allen sweep stakes and get me out of this frozen hell called western PA. I can't take it anymore. I'm pitching lures in the bathtub…the kids don't mind much especially when I don't use hooks. Send me to central CA to fish with yins guys. Please, save me, yours truly, da Bulldog.

  6. The 4.8 kietech is my favorite lure right now last summer I slayed more big bass with that alone than I have the past 2 years one big key though is having a really good swimbait head. If not the kietech is so soft that it will get ruined so fast and you will go thru one every bite or catch so I started dabbing a little glue first and that has been clutch now I can catch 3 or 4 atleast before changing baits. Thanks guys you have really changed the game as far as good fishing knowledge and tip videos keep it up

  7. man i wish they hit like that at my lake the bass hit the lure in the head and i nead to take out line so they can run whit it and they eated and i set the hook because when they bite they only hit the head

  8. What up guys? You fellers are teaching me to slay these suckers! I got my PB this year by utilizing the techniques I learned from Tactical Bassin. She was 10.66 lbs and she is still in the lake, being all beastly and stuff. Thanks for everything guys! I'm a huge fan!

  9. I've used the beast hooks a lot but I recently started trying out Trokar's version. My only issue with the beast hook is that the point is very long which makes the gap between the point and the eye smaller. The Trokars are proportioned better in my opinion. With the beasts I end up skin hooking bigger fish inside the roof of their mouths.

  10. The weedlessness of this is great around me. Most people still fish worms and flip and frog. But I can run that swimbait through some nasty stuff, and kill it in small open pockets. Caught a lot of really good fish doing it. Great video as always guys

  11. Always get a kick out of you two on the boat – your polar opposite in personality – but get along like brothers – one will set a hook almost nailing the other – but it goes unnoticed – wink- ( no big deal ) also enjoy how you don’t dance around the boat when your landing a bass – yes act like you’ve caught one before – wink-
You guys do great work – keep it up . P.s … ever fish lake mead ? Any comment of lake ?
Matt – your all time favorite baitcaster is ? Tim – your all time fav spin reel ?
